I've had it in the back of my mind that I'd like to make a quilt someday. Even got so far as cutting flannel remnants into squares. There's a pile sitting til there are enough to work with but up to now, that's it.

A couple of months ago a friend let me know her son and DIL were having a baby and the shower would be at the end of April. My current chat-along on PR goes from sewing to cooking to whatever life throws at us. Lately a couple of the ladies have been quilting and on a whim, I started googling baby quilts. The group was very encouraging and I soon found myself at a local quilting shop.

So, there's lots of pics to follow - I figure I'd document the whole process.
There were a few tutorials I found starting with this one...the inspiration
It was not quite the simple pattern I was looking for LOL but the half-way stage where it was just all squares seemed easy enough. All these instructions produced my quilt top.

I needed 6 fabrics - the lady in the shop was VERY helpful. A good thing since I was lost looking at walls full of fabric. It's one thing to pick one piece for a garment, quite another to pick SIX that go together! She helped me round out all the choices and put them in a good visual order. I did rearrange them a few times but like her original order the best. Go figure - experience knows best :-)

Choices - baby is supposed to be a girl, so girly-ish colours

Strips sewn together

3 strip blocks ready for slicing

Laying out for placement - each row will need the appropriate number of squares cut off one end and reattached at the other

Partway done - the rectangle is forming - the pieces hanging still need to be shifted

16 rows ready for seaming

Quilt top all seamed and pressed - at this point I was pretty pleased with myself. Little did I know what was to come !

Next up - a trip for batting and backing. This is 1/4 size with everything all just folded over - gave me a good indication of the end product.

All 3 layers cut to size and ready for pinning/basting

Pinning went quicker than I thought but by the time I was finished there was a pin in every square. I had no idea if this was enough or if it was overkill, but this is where I decided to go ahead and start quilting.

Thinking about the actual quilting I pretty much decided on my own to just stitch all the seams 'in the ditch'. I did find a site www.generations-quilt-patterns.com full of information. That link goes to the instructions for actually doing the quilting.

Here I go - walking foot attached, thread picked, tested on a small sample - good to go...
um, not so much ... whaaat the heck ? Isn't this what the walking foot is supposed to PREVENT !?
a 1/2" tuck at the end of the seam...

A horrible drag the entire length of the seam !

...and a close-up of the stitching (proper tension and stitch length is at the bottom left, but just look a the variation all along the seam. And the part where the stitches are tiny is horrible !)

It took me about 5 days to figure out the problem. Multiple machines, all possible settings, different presser feet - yikes ! Finally I found a few forums talking about defective walking feet. Turns out they sometimes get stuck and can use oiling. I drenched the darn thing in oil and left it for a day. Tried again - still dragging. Drenched it again and tried later. The oiling helped and as long as I sewed really slowly it worked.

Half done

All done

No dragging, no tucks - so far, so good.

I didn't want to do separate binding. There were a few websites I found where you just cut the backing larger and fold it to the front for the binding. This is the one I used...Binding
So, my first quilt was an all round success - done on time and new parents liked it.
What am I doing now ? Planning another one (this one only used half the fabric)

If I wait much longer to do a catch-up post you'll likely never hear from me again LOL.

So, as I get pics of my fabric and makes from this year I'll post and mention them. Other than that, I'd just better keep going...

A couple of years ago, I found a few simple living blogs/forums and they piqued my interest. Since then, I've made some changes to my household products, starting with the laundry stuff. Making bar soap ended up on my radar, but working with lye <strike> kinda freaked me out</strike> made me think twice and I put it off for a bit.

Over the summer, I started collecting ingredients and supplies. Last Monday was the day. The dogs were locked out of the kitchen, I collected everything and gave it a go.
Seems to have worked out ok...they have to cure for about 6 weeks though, so I won't really know til then. Here are the results...

Just started to unmold them. The silicone molds worked great. The plastic lining in the plastic Rubbermaid container worked, but it isn't a smooth-edged loaf by any means.

Deciding how many pieces to cut the loaf...big pieces, or small?

There's a shadow in the loaf, apparently ok and will/should go away as they cure.

I cut the loaf into 18 relatively small pieces. Ended up with 29 pieces in total, ranging from 1.6 to 3.3 oz. the larger muffin cups were all over 3oz., the smaller ones were about 2oz. The loaf? Well, let's hope my cutting gets a bit more accurate as I go on LOL

Thanks to everyone who checked up on me. It was really appreciated.

Truth to tell, I was mostly ok just seemed to lose the blogging mojo. Actually I lost a bunch of mojo - you know when you just seem overwhelmed in your head and don't get started at all. That's where I was. So many things I wanted to do but thinking too much and never really got started...or got started and stopped.

Been thinking about a blog post for a while, but after putting it off and putting it off, where do you begin ? Start fresh or catch up ?......or do nothing.

I've been sewing, knitting, even reading my blog list although not commenting much because I've just been so far behind ... all the usual stuff to some degree. I just haven't been overly visible on-line.

OK, lets just do a couple of posts to get back into it.

When I got back from New Brunswick after Christmas, I found a new toy from hubby under the tree...

Brother 3034D - Sooo different from my old Singer, sooo easy to set up and use, I needed a project - quick !

The serger came with a lesson - a trip to Club Tissus to sign up for it produced the Jalie hoodie pattern 2911 and a red/grey stripe jersey.

No idea why it took hold so quickly but I wanted that hoodie NOW! LOL But I didn't want to ruin it so I had to make a muslin. Heavy-ish brown jersey muslin and striped version both made within 3 weeks

Love 'em both, and I was off and running.

When PR Weekend Austin was announced I decided I was going. My last PR Weekend in 2010 I wore only RTW - not this time. I planned a whole wardrobe - LOL deluded much ? I did get 2 new items finished...
There's no eloquence in my writing, it's just words on paper. My youngest brother's calling is writing. he expresses so much meaning and emotion with his words.

My world fell apart 13 days ago. You know my Mom's been in the nursing home with Alzheimers for the past 7 years. She hasn't known anyone for about 3 or 4 of those. On the 18th my sister called - Mom had failed and was being moved to palliative care. She had signed a DNR so there was no care other than morphine for pain. It was just a matter of time. Friday morning the phone rang again "get home". In the midst of a winter storm and holiday travel, I could only get the train - a 24-hour trip by the time I finally arrived in Saint John. I was positive I was too late but I and 2 nephews who were travelling from Edmonton made it on time.

Everyone who was coming, made it. Mom was never left alone and the nursing home accommodated us all. Mom failed Sunday night and we all had time to say our goodbyes. Early Monday morning she passed peacefully with my eldest sister by her side. We had to get through Christmas before the visitation and funeral mass.

Mom lived for Christmas. When Father Doug was speaking with the family during the visitation all of the memories were about the holidays - cookie decorating, music, food, family. Mom would never have wanted the holidays to be affected by her death, but how appropriate it seemed that she went home at this time. We are all so glad that her suffering is over, but it has left a big gaping hole in our hearts.

Mom loved all us kids and would have been so proud that we grew up to be loving and close to each other. During the waiting and through the whole week no one was alone. There was always someone to lean on when we needed it. With so many of us, no one had to do more than they could handle, there was always someone to step in.

Now, I don't know what I'm feeling. It's been so long since she recognized me, but she was always there . When I went home, I could still talk to her even though she couldn't respond. That's gone now and I'm not sure how I'm going to wrap my brain around it.

I love you Mom.

Right now though, 'J' needed more shorts for gym class and her mama couldn't find any - seems navy shorts in September is just too much to ask for - seriously ?! Anyway, I picked up Jalie 3022 thinking I'd try it for her and get a bit of practice before trying the yoga pant for ME !

These were the draft pair. They were passed to mama on Monday and got pics at the 'trying on' stage. Yesterday they were worn all day at school. Her only quibble ? She wants the colour-blocked waistband - with her school name embroidered across it !!! Um, yeah, so plain white it is LOL.

They fit great and she was very comfortable all day, including in gym class. I thought, from the pics (that I've seen but her mama hasn't sent to me yet) that the crotch to waist is too long, but she was comfy so I'm not sure I ought to play with it. Now, I'll cut the rest of the fabric to hopefully get 3 more pairs. These are just navy, but I know now her other school colour is white, so colour blocking is an option for the school shorts. Two plain and two with the white band will be plenty for school, but I'm sure she'd like yoga pants with a bright waist as well (note to self size up 2 sizes). For me, I'll trace my size out soon.

The PR review is linked but...

Pattern Rating: Highly Recommend

Fabric: Cotton-Lycra Knit [See other projects in this fabric]

Pattern Description: Yoga pants (A) that are fitted through the hips and thighs and slightly flared from the knee down. The wide faced two-piece waistband allows for fun color blocking. A seam at the back of the leg provides flattering fit and easy adjustment. The shorts (B) are great for the beach or for dance or gym practice.

Pattern Sizing: child's 2 to women's 22 - I made a size K in shorts

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yep, other than lengthening the leg

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, although I used both the written and the pictures (the pics did not always seem clear to me). And now that one pair is done, I see just how easy they are to put together - the next ones should be QUICK :-)

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Really, really like the 2-piece back leg for shaping and the possibility of colour-blocking the waistband.

Fabric Used: cotton-lycra from Club Tissus. It's a pretty sturdy fabric, medium weight, I guess. It felt right and turns out it's exactly the stretch called for in the pattern.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I originally traced a size I based on verbal instructions but after measuring 'J', it turns out she's right in the size K, where she ought to be for her age, at least for Jalie which are pretty close to RTW measurements. I wanted a bike short - the only alteration was a longer leg, a 7-inch inseam.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? oh yeah

Conclusion: WINNER !

I can get my fix of little girl sewing with the daughter of a friend from work.
A few years ago I made her a couple of sundresses 1st one and 2 more, but seems to me we didn't have much of a summer that year and I'm pretty sure she didn't get a whole lotta use out of them.

This year she turned 7 and they were planning a cupcake party. During a weekend in Toronto, our friends took us to Lens Mills and I found this...

Couldn't pass it up, bought a meter, didn't know what to do with it, DH suggested an apron. J and her mommy cook together so it was a good idea. I found an online tutorial for both the apron and a chef's hat and it turned out pretty well.

The apron is reversible.

Her mom invited me to help out at the party. Actually, she just invited me to attend but with 7 little girls in attendance, it took both of us to keep up with them LOL
Here are pics - full permission to use them.
A little gift sewing, a skirt for me (but not yet finished), a bit of bodice fitting (for M6506),

But today, today I really had a thought come home to me (steam coming out of the ears and all ! LOL)
DH is big on the right tool for the job. I'm getting better (used to be in the camp of 'use a handy butter knife instead of going to find a screwdriver' :-)

I need a top to go with the new skirt that's almost finished and finally decided to try Sorbetto. I think it'll work.

source coletterie.com

I printed off the pattern the other day and hadn't yet cut the pages down to size and taped them together.

I started to do this last night and stopped. Why ?
Well, for paper trimming, you got your scissors...

You got your personal trimmer...

We have both scissors and trimmer at home.

BUT at work we've got THIS !...

That sucker is 60-inches wide and I put it to good use this morning.
Perfectly trimming 16 pages of pattern took about 10 minutes - Fabulous !
...all v-necks, 3 long sleeves, elbow length sleeve and short sleeve.

Looking at the pink version, I still wanted to bring the shoulder point in some more and work on the wrinkles at the bust and underarm.

Burgundy was up next - I made a narrow shoulder adjustment and overshot the mark on the shoulder point by A LOT LOL. I'm not too worried about it. The day I did the pattern adjustments for this one, I was using sewing as a 'keep my mind off of things' activity. To start, she's doing fine now, but a few weeks ago, my Mom had a grand mal seizure which is common with global alzheimers. I don't think it was her first one, although it had the most effect. She also has osteoporosis and the seizure ended up breaking her hip. She needed surgery to do a partial hip replacement with the only goal to be pain-free. Mom doesn't walk any more, of course, so it didn't need to be weight-bearing. Within 2 days of realizing the problem, she had her surgery - on a Saturday...evening ! Around here, that would be unheard of. Mom could have waited a long time in Montreal...I'm glad she was home. Anyway, the next day we were still waiting for updates and I needed to keep busy. In hindsight, I should have stopped after all the adjustments were done and the new pattern traced but BEFORE I cut out the fabric :-)

The green one - what did I do ? hmm...moved the shoulder point out a bit - 1/2-inch, I think and lowered the armhole about 1-inch. The wrinkles are not all gone but they have noticeably shifted. The front hem is a bit high. I could probably add a bit more to the FBA, but all in all I could make this one up 'as is' and be happy.

Looking at the pictures, most of what catches my eye are problems with the fabric. This is a really loose, stretchy knit - comfy, but loose. Every single seam was sewn with wonder tape and basted with the walking foot before serging. It's really comfortable but I have a feeling it's not going to make it through too many washes before it's all out of shape.
I've joined Faye's 2013 Essential Top Sew-A-Long (linked in the sidebar) and have pulled out some of my top patterns. I think I want to play with a different pattern for a while.

The next version of Jalie 2005 was finished Sunday. This post would have been too, if I hadn't misplaced the post-it note I used to write down everything I did !

So, with the green tee (and its pattern) in hand, literally, I pulled down my fitting books and got to work. Fast Fit, Fitting Finesse and The Perfect Fit were all put to good use. I looked up and tagged all my wrinkles everywhere I could find 'em. Not all the books showed them all but where they showed up in more than one book, I had choices in how to fix them.

Fast Fit was a good start - at the beginning of the book there is a specific order of alterations list. I followed it step by step and did the alterations I needed. This is the summary (the sticky has lots more notes - it's amazing what you can fit on a 3x3 inch square piece of paper LOL)

Forward shoulder - another 3/4-inch - shoulder seam is still not on shoulder bone

Body length - I had already added 3 inches - no change

Sleeves

Sleeves need more length - they feel too short - added 2 inches

Sleeves need to be more tapered at the cuff - they're too wide. - decreased 1-inch at each side

I used PhatChick's (Thanks !) directions for adjusting the sleeve with a forward shoulder adjustment. I found these while digging around on PR.

Diagonal wrinkles on sleeves - oops, forgot about these - they're still there :-)

Narrow shoulder - 3/4-inch - armhole seam is still not quite right over shoulder bone.

Narrow neck - by 3/4-inch and also lowered the V-neck down 1-inch

Bust

FBA - 1/2" - not sure if it was enough after all - but there aren't any horizontal wrinkles to show the bust is too tight - so I think it's ok (note - it did NOT help the horizontal underarm wrinkles - at least not much).

Body

More width in the body - completely forgot this too, but it doesn't feel as fitted as the green one does.

I did the alterations one at a time over the week, a little bit each evening. By Friday, it was ready and so I went right home to work on it. Got the main seams done Friday and the 'fixing' done Saturday.

Once it was made up (no, I didn't baste, just serged it all together, sleeves included, except the neckband) I tried it on. It seemed ok except the shoulders both gaped right at my neck. I ran the shoulders through the serger taking off 1/4-inch at the neck tapering to nothing at the shoulder point - and those all-important sleeves that were already attached. That worked, no more gaping. Quite happy with the neck on this one.

Neckband was next and it was so EASY. The Jalie technique again. The basting didn't shift. The point of the V stayed put and the serging was so smooth and even. I have to say, each version of this top has been made with a thicker knit than the previous - from the lightweight print to a lightweight (but heavier than the print) cotton interlock to this cotton interlock. There's not much recovery and not so much stretch, but man, is it ever easy to sew !

Here's the result:

The back could use a swayback adjustment. I don't want a CB seam so won't worry about this. Also, I used wonder tape to do the hem and it's not washed out yet so the hem is tighter around the hips than it will be after a wash.
Those diagonal underarm wrinkles are another story - I don't mind some wrinkles but I'd like to reduce these at least some.
Do I need to lower the armhole ?

The front: still have work to do. The only thing I'm completely happy with is the neck.
There's diagonal pulling pointing to the shoulder point.
The wrinkles above the bust are less and in the side pics below you can see there are still vertical folds at the underarm.
The shoulder width is not narrowed enough - yet.
The sleeves are extra long on purpose, but in this sturdy knit it created the wrinkles all the way up to the elbow.
The diagonal wrinkles at the top - more sleeve cap height ? maybe

The sides: you might be able to see my shoulder point is still forward of the shoulder seam as well as all the extra fabric at the underarm, both front and back.

Back to the drawing board. But this one will be worn as well, indoors anyway. It's heavy enough to feel like a cosy sweater. :-)
Not bad, just wasn't getting much done...especially sewing.

This past October, I 'quickly' (never a good thing) sewed up a Jalie 2005. I really wanted a 'sewn by me' something to wear with the girls in Toronto. Yeah, so it didn't work. Too tight, too short, too everything.

This is the second version. Same fabric as the October wadder. I like it, I'm glad there was enough for a 2nd attempt. It's not perfect, but comfy and I wear it all the time. There were a lot of adjustments. I winged the tracing. It's sort of a T at the shoulders, kind of a V below the armscye, a little wider at the hips. Forward shoulder adjustment. Lengthened, a lot. The body by maybe 4-inches. Lengthened the sleeves from 3/4 to full-length. Widened the sleeves at the bicep - but not enough. It's a really snug sleeve LOL - only wearable because the knit is so soft. I thought it needed an FBA - did I measure ? *snicker* um, nope - I thought and guessed and picked a number. Oh, and I completely forgot how to do an FBA...course I've only done a couple. Did I check my book ? nope again LOL I remembered where the lines go but did not cut them right so when I spread the pattern nothing opened up properly. So I kind of smooshed it down, used lots of tape and crossed my fingers. You do NOT want to see that pattern piece. It's a wonder this thing actually resembles a t-shirt at all. Anyway, here it is.

I used the Jalie instruction for a V-neck and it worked out pretty well. It's even all round - color me surprised.

So, while I could call this a success, there's plenty wrong with it. The print is hiding wrinkles. The neck feels wide. The shoulders are hanging a full inch or more from my shoulder point. Sleeves need a 'touch' more room.

Next version - I decided to be more methodical. I took my measurements and picked a different size. I measured in at a W. Ok - but there was no way I could start with W in the shoulders so I kept T there and swung out to W at the underarm. W all the way down. Grabbed a solid knit I picked up from Fabricville's liquidation table ($2/m I think) and sewed it up.

The question in your minds should be 'did you check it against your previous version before you sewed it up ?' I believe we all know the answer to that :-)

Alrighty then, here we are. Version 2. Worse than the last one. Or at least all the problems are visible ! Isn't it a rule or something, that each version is supposed to get BETTER ?

Mucho wrinkles - Pic below shows them in all their glory - here's what I think:

First things first - don't look at the neck ! It was not the success the first one was LOL

FBA needed. It 'might' also help the horizontal wrinkles at my underarm.Diagonal wrinkles on either side of V-neck. I'm thinking these may be less if I narrow the neck a bit - an inch ?

Diagonal wrinkles on sleeves - just notice them - need to recheck the books for the fix.

Vertical wrinkles at armhole - shoulder needs to be moved in to the shoulder point where it should be.

Sleeves need more length - they feel too short.

Sleeves need to be more tapered at the cuff - they're too wide.

Forward shoulder - another 1.5 cm

More width in the body - it's a bit snugger than the first one.

Did I miss anything - over-think it ? Don't think so. But I finally did pull out both versions of the pattern tracing and match them. Guess what I found ? After all my tweaking of my original T/V sized pattern, that original is the right body width and the right width over the bust. Both of which I would have known if I'd checked first - someone slap me. The armhole is also a better shape (because of the funky FBA) and I don't have the horizontal wrinkles above the bust in that tee. oy !

My success of the week ! You know I was looking for a multi-grain bread recipe. Well, I tried 5 and haven't made any since the end of September. I got sick then Christmas cookie baking took over. Last weekend, I tried a no-knead, bake in a dutch oven bread. FAIL ! Sunday, DH asked what I wanted to do. Well, I had bread making on my mind and decided to go back to square one and start with what I knew. My sister has a FABULOUS recipe for regular white bread. If you remember I made it with my Dad a while back Here and Here
Well, I switched out 2 cups of white flour with 12-grain and made up a half-recipe. The toast was so/so but the bread !! OMG the bread is really good :-) Next time I'll use 3 cups 12-grain flour but the only thing I'm going to try to actually change is the crust - I'd rather a softer crust. Now THIS was where I should have started !

After the packages were all wrapped for our party...I thought I was done. See ? Doesn't that look like more than enough?
Done. yet ?
Nope - this morning I'm in Toronto. Anyone want to hazard a guess how I spend my morning ? You only get one guess !...
Marjie - I can't thank you enough for the visual of deformed hot dogs ! Too funny :-)
These are now all baked and probably won't last long. but NOW I'm done. Thank goodness.

Every year some asks me how many cookies I make. This year I started to keep track. I gave up but a conservative estimate would be in the range of about 135 dozen - it's official - I'm nuts ! LOL

The big Christmas dinner was a couple of weeks ago and was a success. Here are a few shots of the day. One of these years, I'm going to remember I want a group shot.
I remember Mom making these bar cookies but I never had a recipe for them. I found this one online the other day and made 'em last night. Of course, I had to triple it ! ...and changed the raspberry jam to strawberry. That's what I had on hand. I ended up with about 15 dozen.

...and that's a wrap for cookie baking this year...I hope.
The cookies for the diabetic houses are done - ribbon, candy cane, red spritz and green spritz. The candy cane and spritz were all done today as well as a cheesecake.

Can't believe they all made it to the freezer before I realized I hadn't taken pictures. 'course, at this point, you've all seen them before :-)

I still need/want to do the almond cookies and possibly cherry loaves. Maybe I can get some done in the evenings this coming week.

The list is slowly getting checked off.

How was your weekend ?
Later.
My birthday was yesterday and it all started Thursday night - had to cook for our department breakfast on Friday morning. Completely forgot pictures but I made 2 pans of Egg Bread Pudding - This one from food52.com. So, Friday morning was the breaky, Friday afternoon, 3 girls from work and I went for lunch and to see Breaking Dawn, part 2. After we went for a coffee and a gabfest. Saturday, hubby & I went out in the morning - regular errands, the afternoon was spent with a girlfriend and hubby took me out for supper. A new Chinese buffet we've been wanting to try. Today, it was back in the kitchen for more Christmas baking. Another girlfriend came over and I put her to work chopping and sprinkling. We had a great time.

I lost a lot of Christmas baking time in Sep/Oct while I was sick so I've had to make up time !
The to-do lists are underway and I noticed there are a lot of items that get done at the last minute but could be done in advance. This year I'm going to try to get more done ahead of time. So far the ribbon (20 doz), candy cane (12 doz) and spritz (13 doz of each color) are started. Started because I've got a few boxes that need cookies using Splenda instead of sugar - I'll do those batches last to keep them separate. Ribbon and candy cane were done in the last couple weekends. Spritz today, as well as the ice cream, French Vanilla and Eggnog. I'll process the ice cream tomorrow and they'll go into the freezer all done. I may do the cheesecake early too and freeze it.

Here are the cookies so far...

The bowls in the back are the ice cream
Got a couple more bread recipes tested. Like the others, they were a good bread, not a great toast. They froze and thawed well. Still looking.

4th recipe, a 3-loaf batch

5th - this one started with multigrain hot cereal mix rather than multigrain flour

I finished and blocked my Holden shawl for the Espace Tricot September KAL. It's gotten colder lately, fall is in the air. I wore it as a kerchief this week and really liked it. Soft and cozy.

I tried another batch of tomatoes - this time I used Italian tomatoes, much meatier and pureed them. I don't use the blender often but boy, for some things it's just fabulous - 20 lbs tomatoes pureed in less than 5 minutes ! 7 quart bottles for my troubles (now I know just how long it takes to prepare 20 lbs of tomatoes - man !)

What else ? I tried out the Jalie 2005 and 2327
First attempt at the tee was a wadder - but it only needs a bit more room in the upper arm to work, I think.
The underwear was a good first draft - they fit and I managed to get DH to give feedback. Basically, a size smaller, a bit more length on the legs and the waistband a bit higher. Not bad for a first attempt - I had to learn how to do a flatlock stitch and I fought to get my serger switched over to a coverstitch, an acceptable coverstitch, that is (...and that leads to another post...)

LOL

At the beginning of the summer, hubby & I had a day out to a local flea market. It was hot, so I dressed for the 30° weather of the day. That's me in that teeny, tiny short dress ! Hubby had his camera - OY, this dress was short when I bought it but not THIS short !!!!! Now that I've seen the pic it now gets worn with a pair of shorts underneath. 100% cotton and it shrunk a LOT. The hazards of RTW - no preshrinking. It is really comfy though and I decided to try to make a pattern and copy it in a work appropriate length. I made a knee length and maxi length pattern. Only much later did I realize there was some resemblance to the M6559 that was all over Pattern Review this summer.

This was my first version - finished sometime in June. The dress itself was a really easy sew of course, only 4 seams and the hem. The binding was another story. My first time - I tried to copy a few techniques I found online but messed them up. Got them on finally but the stitching is really wonky.

You can see the front is shorter than the back. I copied the original exactly, but am going to have to add an FBA, I think. It'll add a bit of looseness across the bust and a bit of front length. In these pics the dress isn't hemmed. I've since taken an inch off the back to even it out and hemmed it.

Second version was cut out almost right away. Before I decided I needed to adjust for FBA so this one has the cheater fix of just evening out the bottom as well. This time I lowered the front neckline about, an inch, I think. Tightened up the top of the side seam under the arm - it was stretched out a bit in the first version (maybe from the binding, but I wasn't sure - so I took it in about ½-inch right at the top). What else ? Ah, I tried the Jalie binding. It turned out pretty well. I need to work on my topstitching. More of these dresses will give me more practice.

Both are Poly/Lycra blends - no idea if they are ITY or not. The blue was a Fabricville purchase in Toronto back in May, the pink I picked up in Montreal (St Hubert St) in June or July. Bought 2 cuts that day but haven't decided if the 2nd piece will be one of these or another pattern altogether.
At the end of the day, I really like them both, wore them a lot during August and would like more.

During my websurfing in August, I found a local fabric store that carries Jalie patterns as well as patterns from BraMakers Supply. Interesting, very interesting. I went with a list - Jalie 2327, 2908 and 2794 all came home with me (not my whole list, but I'll be going again, for sure - the 45 minute drive means not often, but definitely going back).

Yesterday, I pulled out the 2327, decided on the size, traced it and cut out. Now trying to figure out the flatlock on the serger. After WAY to much time examining both DH and DB's underwear, LOL, I'm pretty sure that's the seam I'm supposed to be using. If it works out, that the end of horrendously expensive underwear for DH. It's awful what they charge for such a little bit of fabric and an elastic. Sorry, Marjie, this is another one you may not want your dearly beloved to know about. :-)
On Saturday I had a 'want to do' list as long as my arm but only got some laundry done - we were supposed to have beautiful weather and I made the most of using the clothesline. The rest of the day DH & I spent in front of the telly watching movies and knitting (well, me knitting, not him LOL)

My homemade coat hanger swift was put together and I started in on the 14 hanks of wool I picked up recently at a local thrift store.

There are 7 hanks of each. Said thrift store had them bundled up in bags 3orange/3green plus one with one of each. If you wanted one you had to buy 'em all. 'eh, for $15 total it was ok with me. It's pretty scratchy yarn. The green is labeled and it's an OLD company, closed now. The yarn is probably 30 years old. The orange wasn't labeled anywhere - I'm working under the assumption that it's the same stuff. The green's a bit thicker. Winding's going to be a pain. The orange ball I wound stuck on itself like velcro. It'll give me plenty of time to decide what to do with them.

My LYS Espace Tricot is having a knit-along (KAL) for the month of September. I decided to join in and see if I could finish a project in a month. There was a vote of 3 choices and the Holden Shawlette won. I cast on and have made quite a bit of progress so far. Using one of the yarns DH bought me for Christmas - Sweet Georgia Yarns CashLuxe Fine. It's really soft.

A couple weeks ago, I made my first loaf of multigrain bread. It was ok but I want a soft, airy, soft crust, freezable, good for sandwiches and good for toast bread. Not asking for much, huh ? This was my second recipe. Much denser and not as nice for either sandwiches or toast.

After doing nuttin' on Saturday, Sunday and today were much more productive. This was bread recipe #3. Bonus, it was a 2 loaf recipe. Whoa - light (check), airy (check), soft crust (check), freezable (2nd loaf is in the freezer - will find out later how well it thaws), toast was passable - soft but a bit crumbly. So far, this one is way ahead of the curve. The only issue is the sugar - it calls for 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 CUP ! I don't think so, the bread has a sugary taste and the sugar is definitely coming out (or at least cut way down) if I make this one again.

More cooking...for the past few years, I've thought about buying a bushel of tomatoes and making tomato sauce. Out for groceries yesterday, I stopped in a a local farmer's stall and picked up a 1/2 bushel, about 14 lbs for $8

Today I blanched, peeled, cooked and canned my little heart out and ended up with...

6 quarts of crushed tomatoes. They seem fine, sealing properly. But I wasn't expecting this. I didn't puree the cooked tomatoes so there is liquid in the jars but the tomatoes are floating on top of liquid at the bottom of each bottle. Is that normal - do any of you know ?

So that was the sum total of my weekend. I had sewing on the list but never got to the sewing room. I've had 2 dresses (oh and a skirt, too) done for a while but completely forgot to have DH get pics, duh.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend :-)
Bell was sending a techie to see why one of our satellite receivers wasn't working. You know if you've ever waited for a service call, they could come at any time - so, you don't make other plans.

My in-house plan included sewing, but it hasn't happened quite yet.
It also included baking. Yesterday saw a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies done up and today I tried a loaf of multi grain bread.

Last year I switched to multi grain and have been looking to find a recipe to make it myself. This week's visit to Bulk Barn netted me some 12 grain flour and a recipe. The result is below...
It was cut sometime before the end of 2011 but never sewn. I sewed it all but the neckband a couple weeks ago and finished it a few days ago. He likes it and I'll make him more - only need to add some inches to the length so it can be used as an undershirt with his work uniform and stay tucked in.
Seams #2 and 3 - the armholes of my HotPatterns Fringe Tee - free download from fabric.com.
This one too, was cut ages ago, but it was all sewn up except for the armholes. Now it's done and wearable, but I haven't quite decided if I like enough to try again. Really don't like the neckband of the tie, it's too wide and floppy on the back of my neck.
